Digital Media: a New Space, with New Players

AlwaysOn introduces the first annual 'OnHollywood 100' list, which features the top private companies in the developing digital media entertainment sector.

These organizations are redefining the way entertainment is created, distributed, and experienced. Digital entertainment, information, and communication are shifting from a provider- to a consumer-driven paradigm, and the digital media entertainment space is teeming with opportunity and innovation.

Consumer demand for new products and services like digital video recorders (DVRs) has taken off, as have new trends like podcasting, videoblogging, and mobile and user-generated content. Digital media in the home was just the beginning. Consumers now expect to control all aspects of their experience, by gaining anywhere, anytime access to all their digital media.

The composition of the inaugural OnHollywood 100 includes all major segments of digital media and offers a glimpse of future trends. Content Delivery Platforms, which includes innovators such as Akimbo, Orb Networks, and SlingMedia, is the largest category and represents 23 percent of the OnHollywood 100.

Enabling Tools, Applications, and Services companies like mBlox, SnoCap, and DivX also featured prominently, accounting for approximately 22 percent of the list. Consumer Services companies, which are creating new communities and digital media experiences, make up 18 percent of the list; they're represented by companies like Ampd Mobile, MobiTV, and YouTube.

Rounding out the OnHollywood 100 categories are Devices, Components, and Infrastructure; Digital Content Publishing; and B2B Services, which include companies such as Danger, ManiaTV, and Umbria.
