Artificial Intelligence for National Border Security

National border protection agencies are under pressure to provide the highest level of security in the face of growing threats, such as increasing illegal migration and international terrorism.

Now, government agencies are embracing advanced border security technologies to aid in effectively and reliably securing national borders.

These solutions look to detect and identify potential threats and prevent them from escalating to a point that may jeopardize security.

Security Surveillance Market Development

Traditional border security patrols and Closed-circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance systems aren't adequate protection, and agencies must increasingly deploy new solutions to stay ahead of criminals and other potential threats to ensure the safety of a country’s borders.

According to the latest market study by Juniper Research, the value of the border security technology market will exceed $70 billion globally in 2027 -- that's rising from $48 billion in 2022.

Growing by 47 percent during the forecast period, Juniper predicts that the adoption of AI‑integrated technologies, such as advanced surveillance systems, will be a key driver.

Border security agencies are using several technologies, including digital camera systems and perimeter intrusion detection systems, to automatically detect and identify illegal border crossers.

Juniper predicts that border perimeter security technologies will account for 36 percent of market revenue globally by 2027 -- that's up from 26 percent in 2022.

Juniper's analysts found that countries are increasingly seeking automated perimeter technologies to secure borders from the growing illegal movement of people by migrant traffickers.

"Growing political unrest and conflicts have increased illegal movement. Accordingly, vendors must highlight their solutions’ ability to automatically detect and track people attempting to cross borders when marketing their products," said Jordan Rookes, research analyst at Juniper Research.

Juniper also predicts that the adoption of AI-integrated surveillance towers will be critical to driving growth, with the total value of camera systems globally expected to reach $22.8 billion by 2027 -- that's up from $10.1 billion in 2022.

Border security surveillance towers are capable of creating a virtual border guard -- essentially monitoring, detecting, identifying, and tracking potential security threats over great distances.

Outlook for Surveillance Technology Apps Growth

However, these AI-integrated surveillance towers are at the center of growing concern by human rights groups, regarding their potential to analyze the behavior of a nation's legal citizen population.

These concerns may slow adoption. Security vendors must therefore ensure that privacy regulations, such as GDPR, are adhered to and the population is made aware of the data protection measures in place.

That said, I believe the illegal movement of migrants by human traffickers has become one of the toughest national security issues for government leaders to combat -- clearly, there is room for progress and all viable solutions should be considered.

Global Rise of Domestic Payment Ecosystems

Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) – comprising digital wallets, instant payments, and QR payment systems – are experiencing explosive growth that's reshaping the global financial services marketplace. According to the latest worldwide market study by ABI Research , the combined global transaction value for APMs is projected to reach $142 trillion by 2030. What's particularly fascinating is the underlying driver behind this trend: a growing desire for financial sovereignty, with nations developing domestic payment ecosystems rather than remaining dependent on international financial networks. Payment Ecosystem Market Development In 2024, approximately 45 percent of the global population used digital wallets – a remarkable adoption rate for a technology that barely existed a decade ago. China leads this transition, with 95 percent of its population using WeChat's payment functionality. WeChat exemplifies the "super app" phenomenon, where payment capabilities are in...
