Neuf Cegetel Offers Free International Calls

The French telecoms marketplace is one of the most competitive -- Neuf Cegetel, France's second-largest fixed-line telecommunications operator, said Friday that it's offering free international phone calls, following Iliad SA's move Thursday.

The enhanced offer underscores the efforts telecom operators are making to stem the erosion of their client base in the face of competition from free Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone offers from companies like Skype.

In an emailed statement, Neuf Cegetel said it would offer free international calls from France to anywhere in the European Union, North America, India and China beginning December 25. The offer also includes free calls to cell phones in North America.

Neuf Cegetel said the offer is valid for its fully unbundled subscribers, or those who don't pay incumbent France Telecom for their home phone line.
