Global IoT and M2M Solutions Market Growth Trends

The Internet of Things (IoT) and machine to machine (M2M) solutions market continues to evolve, showing growth in all world regions and vertical industries. A variety of hardware and software vendors are helping to propel the emerging technology and associated use cases to new heights. As an example, the market for cellular IoT gateways, routers and modems is expanding, according to the latest worldwide market study by Berg Insight. More than 3.4 million cellular IoT gateways were shipped globally during 2018, at a total market value of approximately $921 million. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.5 percent, annual shipments are expected to reach 8 million in 2023. IoT Gateway Market Development Cellular IoT gateways are standalone devices intended for connecting machines to a wireless communication network. These include general-purpose cellular gateways, routers and modems that are enclosed in a chassis and have at least one input/output port. Note that ...

Internet of Things Device Market Gains Momentum

Demand for Internet of Things (IoT) devices continues to grow. Berg Insight released new findings of the market for cellular IoT gateways, routers and modems. About 3.2 million cellular IoT gateways were shipped globally during 2017 -- that's an increase of 22 percent from the previous year. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.2 percent, annual shipments are expected to reach 8.6 million in 2023. Cellular IoT gateways are standalone devices intended for connecting M2M applications to a cellular network. Internet of Things Market Development These include primarily general-purpose cellular routers, gateways, and modems that are enclosed in a chassis and have at least one input/output port. Trackers, telematics devices and other specialized devices are excluded from this report. According to the Berg Insight assessment, North American vendors dominate the cellular IoT gateway, router and modem market. Cradlepoint, Sierra Wireless, Cisco and Digi Internatio...

Why Broadband CPE Lacks Meaningful Innovation

The device that broadband service providers place in a subscriber's home could be a point of differentiation, but most are basically alike. The vendors merely attempt to reach parity with the stated industry standard requirements. The products are often procured based upon the lowest price. It's surprising that there is no start-up company that's truly attempting to disrupt this product category. Surely, the service providers would notice if anyone created some meaningful and substantive innovation. Telecom and cable companies have said that they crave vendors that offer new ideas. Worldwide broadband customer premise equipment (CPE) shipments are expected to reach 151.9 million by the end of 2014, according to the latest worldwide market study by ABI Research. "The residential gateway segment continues to grow at a rapid pace. We expect global shipments will grow more than 9 percent in 2014," said Jake Saunders, VP and practice director at ABI Research . ...

Upside for M2M Application Enablement Platforms

According to the latest market study by ABI Research, cellular wireless machine-to machine (M2M) application development has traditionally been a complex, costly, and time-consuming endeavor. Typically, software developers create their applications from start to finish as entirely custom projects. However, across different applications and verticals, there is actually much commonality of requirements in terms of core features and functionality. For example, how to model an object in the application, how to create rules and alerts, and how to provide security mechanisms are all features that span the M2M market. Increasingly, third-party providers of what ABI Research calls Application Enablement Platforms (AEPs) -- software designed to provide these core features for multiple M2M applications -- are stepping up their efforts to abstract away much of the burden of application development. "ABI Research believes the Market for AEP software will grow from about $169 million ...

Anticipating 4G Mobile Network Subscriber Adoption

Wireless fourth-generation (4G) mobile network subscriber adoption will escalate in 2012 -- as a variety of 4G-enabled mobile devices, such as USB dongles, smartphones, media tablets, 4G portable hotspots, and wireless broadband CPE modems, are shipping this year. "4G devices are expected to generate 87 million in unit sales in 2012, that's up 294 percent year-on-year,” states Jake Saunders, vice president of forecasting at ABI Research . According to their latest market assessment, the lion’s share of the global market is now backing LTE as service provider and vendor support has fallen away from the WiMAX fourth generation wireless network standard. Observing the success of 3G cellular services, ABI analysts believes that it is clear there is a natural evolutionary demand from end-users, both business and consumer, to jump onto the 4G data bandwagon. However, there are still some teething issues that will need to be resolved. Some operators in Western Europe have st...

Were Cable MSOs Prepared for the OTT Disruption?

Why are the legacy U.S. cable service providers only now starting to address industry analyst concerns that they seem unprepared for the emerging alternative low-cost over-the-top (OTT) video offerings? Could this unfortunate scenario have been avoided, and did they have the means to counter this offensive? Traditionally, the cable TV industry has relied upon MPEG-based technology to transport digital video signals. But there has also been a longstanding awareness of Internet Protocol (IP) video solutions, according to the latest market study by In-Stat . There's three reasons that MSOs should have acted sooner: In comparison to MPEG, IP is considered to be less-expensive and more efficient. An integrated DOCSIS cable modem is a capable, and yet often underutilized, part of the digital cable set-top box. The availability and applications of IP video has expanded exponentially -- this ongoing transformation was apparent for several years. There's no mystery here. "Whe...

93 Million Cellular PC Modem Upside in 2010

Wireless network modem shipments in 2009 topped 72 million units, a significant growth over the 46.4 million units shipped during 2008. According to the latest market study by ABI Research , both volumes pale in comparison with the expected 93 million units expected to ship in 2010. The overwhelming majority of these modems are found in the USB dongle form factor rather than embedded in their host devices. "Many new mobile broadband networks are being deployed right now," says ABI Research principal analyst Jeff Orr. The HSPA and HSPA+ protocols, as well as 4G WiMAX and LTE, are luring new broadband service subscribers who want their existing computing and communications devices to be enabled for those networks. Orr adds, "We find that new computer sales with embedded modem modules are being adopted between 9 and 12 months after the new network services launch, while USB modems are an immediate upgrade opportunity." ABI practice director Kevin Burden says, ...
