Place-Shift Your TiVo DVR Content, for Free

Orb Networks has launched DVR place-shifting software, dubbed "DVR Everywhere," that allows users of TiVo's Series2 DVRs to both schedule and play recordings remotely via the Internet from a range of networked devices, including PCs, WiFi-enabled laptops, and mobile phones connected to any broadband provider's network.

The software can be downloaded for free from www.dvreverywhere.com. "A lot of times, my TiVo DVR records my favorite TV shows while I'm at the office or flying to another country," said Orb Networks' VP of product marketing, Ian McCarthy. "Now I have options for enjoying them whenever I want. I can play them at work, stream them to my Nokia phone on Cingular here in the U.S., or remotely initiate a TiVoToGo transfer to my laptop's TiVo Desktop to watch them on the flight back from Japan."

According to Orb Networks, DVR Everywhere is an add-on to the company's existing Orb software for Windows XP, which allows users to access their home TV service, and their photo and music files remotely over a PC. DVR Everywhere utilizes the Orb Add-Ons API, which Orb Networks released last summer under the open-source Mozilla License, and which the company says is designed to enable developers to make a wide variety of programs and content available from almost all Web-enabled devices through the Orb interface.

No special software is required to use DVR Everywhere from mobile phones or PDAs: viewers can play and program recordings from their devices' native Web browsers and streaming Windows Media Players, RealPlayers or 3GP players.

The latest worldwide market study by ABI Research offers a timely and data-rich window into just how fast that transformation is unfolding. Wearables Market Development Wearable device shipments are projected to grow from 402.96 million in 2026 to 544.08 million by 2031, as vendors broaden access to advanced health, fitness, and connectivity features at more affordable price points. That is not incremental growth; it represents a meaningful expansion of who is wearing smart technology and why. Equally compelling is the revenue picture: the category is expected to generate $44.22 bil...
