South by Southwest 10th Annual Web Awards

This year the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Festival, a conference targeting web technology innovators and digital creatives from across the globe, will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its SXSW Web Awards, designed to honor web designers and developers who fuel the online world.

Finalists in sixteen categories have been previously announced. Winners will be revealed at the upcoming SXSW Web Awards Ceremony presented by Adobe on Sunday, March 11 at 7:30 pm, during the SXSW Interactive Festival. This event will be hosted by web celebrity Ze Frank, best-known for his popular and comedic online videoblog, "The Show with Ze Frank."

Over the past ten years, SXSW Web Awards entries have been a indicator of online trends and there's been a significant improvement in the overall caliber and complexity of entries with the evolution of dynamic content, web standards and coding technologies such as CSS.

Current trends such as Web 2.0 and the growth of social networking sites illustrate the realization of Internet seeds that were planted more than a decade ago. Judges of the 10th Annual Web Awards will select from a broad list of topic categories. A complete list of finalists and their Web site entries can be found at the SXSW website.

Scheduled between March 9-13 in Austin, Texas, the SXSW Interactive Festival provides practical how-to information as well as inspiration for attendees. The event features four days of keynote speeches, more than 130 panels, the SXSW Web Awards, the iF! Trade Show & Exhibition, and dozens of evening events.

The 2007 Interactive festival speakers include Amanda Congdon, Dan Rather, Kevin Rose, Kathy Sierra, Bruce Sterling, Phil Torrone, Gina Trapani and many more members of the evolving online and digital media community.

I'll be attending both the SXSW Interactive and Film Festivals, starting this weekend. As in prior years, I'll also be writing a column for the AlwaysOn Network, regarding my observations and perspective of the most interesting insights shared during the Festivals. In particular, I'll be looking for signs of emerging disruptive business models within the digital media space.

The Billions Bet on Tentative AI Demand

Gartner's latest worldwide IT spending forecast exposes a trend every CIO has already felt in budget negotiations. Total spending will climb 14.2 percent in 2026, reaching $6.37 trillion. It seems that the IT infrastructure market is simply having a strong year. However, the more useful insight is how unevenly that growth is distributed. The Headline Number vs. The Real Story Data center systems and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) are absorbing capital at a pace several multiples faster than devices, communications services, and traditional IT services. This is not incremental growth spread across a healthy portfolio. It is a wholesale reallocation of enterprise technology budgets toward AI infrastructure, made on the expectation that demand for AI workloads will justify the outlay before that demand has been fully proven. Where the Money is Going Data center systems are forecast to grow 62.5 percent in 2026, that's up from 51.6 percent growth in 2025, reaching $822 billion....
