China Prepares for IPTV Services

China Telecom and Changhong signed a cooperation agreement to jointly promote IPTV, reports Chinanews. Changhong will set up 1,000 IPTV product stores in 17 cities, including Shanghai, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shaanxi.

The stores will promote Changhong's IPTV products and will have network support provided by China Telecom. According to Changhong, users can use IPTV services in three ways: by connecting an IPTV set top box to a TV; by using a combination set top box and TV, which Changhong sells; or by purchasing Changhong's recently launched EZ Station compatible home entertainment box "Shu Ba."

Also announced, Shanghai Media Group (SMG) announced that it will officially launch IPTV service in Shanghai's Minhang District and the Pudong New Area in December, reports Oriental Morning Post.

The service will cost 60 Yuan per month and will include 50 channels. According to SMG, it will offer 1,000 hours of movies for on demand viewing (VOD) with plans to expand the selection to 3,000 to 5,000 hours. SMG's IPTV service will be known as BesTV, said the report. SMG will roll out the service in other districts in Shanghai in 2006, said SMG assistant to the president Zhang Dazhong.
