The rapid growth of eCommerce has brought convenience to consumers worldwide, but it has also opened new avenues for fraudsters to exploit. As online transactions become increasingly prevalent, retail merchants face mounting challenges in safeguarding revenues and maintaining customer trust. This evolving threat of merchant fraud prevention is at a critical juncture, with emerging technologies playing a pivotal role in the ongoing battle against sophisticated fraud threats. Fraud Prevention Market Development The eCommerce boom, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has created a fertile ground for fraudulent activities. Merchants across various industries are grappling with implementing robust fraud detection and prevention measures to mitigate unnecessary revenue losses from chargebacks and order reprocessing. The stakes are high, as evidenced by Juniper Research's latest market study which forecasts the value of eCommerce fraud will rise from $44.3 billion in 2024 to $107 billio...

Soft POS Transactions will Reach $11.8 Billion

Societal shifts have affected how retail customers shop. The move toward a 'cashless' society was accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to more eCommerce transactions and online spending. Meanwhile, in-store retail Point of Sale (POS) terminals transformed. Traditional hardware-based POS systems evolved into specialized solutions, which provide compact mobile terminals. However, the arrival of software-based 'Soft POS' solutions will disrupt this market. Soft POS Market Development All POS systems process payment transactions by forming a connection between a buyer’s and a seller’s respective bank accounts for the transaction to occur, and actioning the exchange of funds. According to the latest worldwide market study by Juniper Research, the global transaction value processed via Soft POS solutions will reach $11.8 billion by 2028, which is up from $1 billion in 2023. A virtual card is an online payment tool that has similar attributes as a traditional Credit or Debit card, with key components including a 16-digit card number, an expiry date, and a CVV number. These cards are digitized versions of a physical card or a card that only exists in its virtual form and is stored in digital wallets. The distinctive feature of virtual cards is the enhanced layer of security. Virtual Card Market Development According to the latest worldwide market study by Juniper Research, by 2028 global virtual card spending will have increased by 355 percent -- that's from $3.1 trillion in 2023. The key growth driver will be the adoption of API-based virtual card issuing platforms. Juniper analysts explored the use cases where virtual cards use temporary card numbers linked...

Subscription Payments will Exceed $15.4 Trillion

The recurring subscription payments market is undergoing significant growth, primarily driven by the acceleration of consumer adoption. The market deals with periodic subscriptions to a variety of goods and services offered as an alternative payment model. While subscriptions have existed for a long time, their use in the consumer products marketplace is still evolving. Despite the usage being relatively new, the proliferation has been rapid and has spanned many different vertical markets. Recurring Payments Market Development According to the latest worldwide market study by Juniper Research, the transaction value of recurring payments will exceed $15.4 trillion globally in 2027 -- that's up from $13.2 trillion in 2023. As more retail me...

Total Transaction Value of eCommerce Fraud

Fact: online payments are a prime target of cyber-criminals. There are millions of potential loopholes to exploit as payment card details are stored while processing routine online eCommerce transactions. The Dark Web is where criminals interact without being traced. This is where fraudsters buy and sell payment card details and share information on how to steal funds, and the best tools to use. From market data, it's clear that online retail payments are convenient. However, they've also created a playground for people intent on defeating the structures on which online payments rely. Trust, it seems, is breaking down. Plus, the security threats continue to evolve and test anti-fraud measures. Online Payment Market Development According to the latest worldwide market study by Juniper Research, the cumulative merchant losses to online payment fraud between 2023 and 2027 are forecast to exceed $343 billion. As a comparison, this equates to over 350 percent of Apple’s reported net...

The global retail sector is undergoing a significant disruption from technology-based innovations. Online eCommerce is part of the story, but there's nearly as many dramatic changes occurring within physical retail stores -- particularly at the point of sale (POS). A POS terminal is an electronic device used to process card or contactless mobile payments at retail or merchant locations such as stores, restaurants etc. The terminal can be owned by the retailer or an acquirer-owned terminal (i.e. provided on a rental basis to the merchant). However, the low value nature of contactless payments means that it will only represent just 5 percent of the total value of all worldwide POS transactions in 2017....

Curated Retail: When Less Choice Equals More Sales

As online retailing matures and expands, the number of choices available to shoppers grows exponentially. Moreover, offering more product choice can result in a confusing clutter that slows down or inhibits the purchase process. Despite the online retailer quest to find the ultimate automated, personalized recommendation system, there has been a simultaneous rise in sites that provide hand-picked item selections and online retail models offering fewer products -- instead of more. "Curated ecommerce is becoming recognized by both retailers and shoppers for its simplicity and ability to help fill an online void," said Krista Garcia, eMarketer analyst. There will always be a place for comprehensive, multi-category retail sites, but fine-tuned collections enhanced by personal touches also perform a necessary function in the ecommerce ecosystem. Sites surveyed by the e-tailing group in Q4 2011 reported online curation was a growing merchandising tactic with savvy retaile...
