Chinese Telecom Sector Still in Growth Mode

China Telecom announced its first quarter 2006 financial results. At the end of the first quarter, China Telecom's un-audited net profit was 5.91 billion Yuan on revenue of 43.01 billion Yuan. In the first quarter, China Telecom added 5.09 million new telecom subscribers for a total of 215.2 million subscribers. China Telecom's broadband users increased by 2.14 million in the first quarter for a total of 23.16 million users.

In other news, China Mobile released its first quarter 2006 financial results. At the end of the first quarter, China Mobile's revenue was 65.02 billion Yuan, up 19 percent from year on year. The company's net profit was 14.36 billion Yuan, up 28 percent year on year. At the end of March, China Mobile had 260.65 million registered users. First quarter monthly ARPU (average revenue per user) was 0.86 Yuan, according to the report.
